My main dining room is usually built either above ground, or in a channelled out area with a roof built over it. I'll plant pig tails and get a cloth industry going later, once I have the population to support it, but before that I'll import a crap load of leather and cloth. I tend to simplify my embark profile a lot, with just food, picks, a couple axes, ducks and dogs, and wood. I'll go in the manager screen every so often, and order a couple hundred made. I don't worry about barrels any more since stone pots were added. If I have deep enough soil, I'll channel out a big area, and floor it over for a more secure surface source. This is a great supplement to the standard Dwarf fare, and can jump start surface farms once you have enough resources. Not really, but I do get nervous.ĭon't forget to set an area above ground (if it's safe enough and in a area with plants) for gathering. If I don't have 10k units of food and 10k units of drink in two years, the fort is a failure. My forts don't starve either (just die off of dehydration when the river freezes, I didn't get the mechanisms hooked to cistern fill control soon enough, and I forgot to build the stills). I bring at least 10 of each seed type I can, and set up 5x5 farms for each. Even on vegetarian forts (often for me, just to be lazy), I'll end up with tens of thousands of eggs. This gives an unlimited amount of meat and eggs, just lock the door every so often to allow some ducklings to hatch. I always bring a few egg-layers (usually ducks, because quack). That said, I'll often import them in instead of bringing them on embark.

They're also useful if you have a fog or rain, to test out it's effects, or if there's a nasty syndrome-causing mess on the floor. You can also train them as a distraction for hostiles/elves, and chain them up outside your fortress for an early warning system. I usually drop the anvil, as prepared food can easily give me enough to trade for a few. More if I'm embarking somewhere that I really don't want to be outside very long. It's an extremely rare occasion I ever need to even worry about food, or that I can't buy out the entire caravan by Y2.įor my embarks, I always bring 3 picks, minimum. My embark is generally ten hens, one rooster, maybe a few animals for butchering, eight Plump Helmets, and a couple of booze/foods just so they don't starve the first season during set up.

It pretty much breaks the game I can buy out entire caravans with barrels of prepared food. It also gives you the ability to cook a ton of food, which means you very quickly gain a Legendary chef. Shitload of meat, and now you have even more egg-laying hens. Butcher all but one rooster and all but the number of additional hens you want. Lock them in a room and set the door to forbidden for a season and all the eggs will hatch. You can have pretty much infinite eggs and meat if you want. You can literally lock them in a dark cave with no food or water forever as long as they have a single rooster and a nest box each.
